Activities 2023

  • The teachers of our partner the ‘Friends in Sport Academy’ in Freetown commenced with an on-line teachers training, unique in Sierra Leone. This year they had two more three-day trainings. The training was given completely voluntarily by a specialist from http://www.kikoeducation.com . With our support the teachers try and implement what they have learned during this training.
  • Friends in Sport Academy (FiS) is a community school right in the heart of Malama, Freetown. The school structure consists of sticks and the roof is made of corrugated iron. Not an ideal and safe environment. The plan for 2023 is to start building a proper school. SFE is trying to raise money to fulfill this project. The teachers and pupils are trying to raise money within the community with the ‘1 Leone Campaign’. Some people have already donated, others have started with the actual physical work by making the ground ready.
  • FiS had a 100% score of all pupils taking the high school exams, this is unique! It shows the seriousness and the hard work they are all putting in it.
  • All eight Ebola-orphans have been taken on a trip through Sierra Leone. For most of them it was the first time they ever left their community / village.
  • All eight Ebola-orphans have passed their primary or secondary school exams and one has enrolled into university.
  • The Ebola-orphans have started a videoproject together with our local coordinators in Makeni. They will learn new skills like; writing a script, talking in public, filming and editing. They are properly trained and guided by our youth ambassador from Apex Multimedia https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100076269879220
  • Our talented law student has passed his final year of law school with excellent results and has recently started the bar. He is hoping to graduate as a lawyer by june next year.
  • SFE is supporting two more students enrolling into university. Both had been at home for the past two years as funds to pay for school were not there. The same two students are now working as local coordinators for our projects in Makeni, Sierra Leone.
  • SFE has hosted a three-day training course ‘Grassroots Football’ for coaches and managers two times. Both courses were attended by approx. 60 community football coaches from around the country but mainly the Kono area. The level 3 course will be held in 2023.
  • In Kono SFE, in partnership with Golden Soccer Academy, kicked off the first ever Youth Development Football League. This league is designed for the community clubs within the Kono area. Kono is well known for its diamond mines. A lot of youth end up in these mines, there are a lot of criminal activities and girls end up being pregnant and married at an early age. School attendance is low. This league aims to tackle these problems by letting the youth play football. In turn, the kids must go to school. School attendance will be monitored by the coaches.
